Daily Prayer

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives, recovery of sight to the blind,
to set the oppressed free, and to declare the year of the Lord’s favor.”
— Luke 4:18–19 (RSV)

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for the many moments when Your light breaks through our darkness,
when Your strength lifts our weakness, and when Your healing touches our sickness.

You hear the cries of our hearts.
You delight in the love we give when we lift up the name of Jesus and rejoice in our Savior.

Help us to remain in this spirit of gratitude and faith.
Draw near to us with fresh demonstrations of Your power,
not for our glory, but for the glory of Your name.

Come, Lord, into the quiet places of our hearts,
and help us truly understand what it means that You are our Father—through Jesus Christ.

Amen. 🙏

Finding the Will of God

Following the Lord is a wonderful and satisfying adventure.

John 14:23-27

Discovering God’s will is an ongoing adventure with wonderful rewards. God’s Word is our map, and the Holy Spirit is our guide. He also provides “road signs” as we travel:

Circumstances. God can communicate through our situations—even negative ones. To discern meaning, we must relate biblical principles to what’s happening, realizing God won’t contradict His Word. Rather, His will always upholds it.

Counsel. God may direct us through wisdom from others.

Conscience. Once our “inner alarm system” has been programmed according to scriptural values, we can use it as a resource to determine God’s plan for our life.

Common Sense. When decisions need to be made quickly, the Spirit helps us make choices that honor God (James 1:5-6).

Compulsion. Sometimes God gives us compelling desires to see to it that certain things happen. If there’s no contradiction with Scripture and our inner feelings remain strong over time, we should likely move ahead.

Contentment. God gives peace when we obey Him.

With the Bible as your itinerary, keep watching for the “road signs” God places in your path. The heavenly Father does not want you to miss His perfect will for your life.

The Reality of God’s Love

Are you convinced of God’s boundless love for you? If not, you can be.

2 Corinthians 11:23-27

Is there anything that prevents you from feeling confident that God loves you? Perhaps you’re convinced some sin from your past blocks His care and compassion. In that case, think about Paul. He violently persecuted Christians before he himself finally turned to the Lord. If such a man knew God loved him, would that help you realize you, too, are loved?

Whatever experiences you’re concerned about, Paul probably encountered something you can relate to. Yet he kept spreading his message of hope—that God loves us and sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins (John 3:16). Whether your situation is unfair, painful, or embarrassing, the fact that it happened doesn’t mean God has stopped loving you. Sometimes we face difficulty because He is polishing our rough edges and shaping us into His image. Other times trials instigated by Satan are allowed in our life through the Lord’s permissive will. Either way, God is working everything out to our good, according to His individualized purpose for each believer.

Here’s the key to accepting the truth of unconditional divine love: Focus on God rather than circumstances. When you’re learning of Him, talking with Him, and sharing your life with Him, trust and faith naturally replace doubt and fear.

The Holy Spirit: God’s Presence

After Jesus returned to heaven, He sent the Holy Spirit to live in us.

Acts 2:1-4

Some people think the Holy Spirit’s first appearance was at Pentecost. But He’s mentioned in the creation account (Genesis 1:2) and throughout the Old Testament and Gospels. Then, in today’s passage, the Spirit arrives in the upper room with a fresh mission.

In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit empowered individuals for specific tasks. For example, Bezalel’s God-given wisdom and craftsmanship enabled him to become the tabernacle’s chief architect (Exodus 31:1-5). We also read that the Spirit settled upon leaders needing help in administration (Numbers 11:16-17), warriors facing formidable tasks (Judges 6:34), and men called to proclaim God’s Word (Ezekiel 2:1-4).

Indicating that the Spirit’s involvement with believers would be different than before, Jesus told the disciples, “He abides with you and will be in you” (John 14:17). God’s Holy Spirit had come alongside them during their time with Jesus but would dwell within them following the ascension.

Since Pentecost, every believer has received the Holy Spirit. If Jesus is the vine and we’re the branches, then the Spirit is the energizing sap that equips us. He no longer comes and goes but now remains permanently. He seals us in Christ—proof of the promise that we are forever in God’s presence (Ephesians 1:13-14).

The Affliction of Paul

The difficult season that drains your strength can also be the time when God’s fills you with His.

2 Corinthians 1:8-11

It’s easy to assume that problems in biblical days looked different from those we face today. So you might wonder what a first-century missionary can teach us about triumphing over adversity. Though Paul’s culture was quite different from ours, some things are the same—such as temptation, hardship, and sin. Therefore, when the apostle wrote of being burdened beyond his strength, he had experience to back up his words.

Paul “despaired even of life” (2 Cor. 1:8), but he trusted in a God who controls all things. He believed that the Lord would sustain him during difficult seasons. How could he be certain? Paul learned to trust God during affliction in the same way that we do: He was thrown into high-pressure situations with impossible odds, and yet he saw the Lord triumph. We understand divine power when we reach the limits of our own strength and feel God’s supernatural energy carry us through. That isn’t to say believers can avoid all sorrow and pain. Rather, we have the promise that God will meet our needs. Our faith grows stronger when we trust Him in times of affliction.

God’s strength is available to all believers who confess their weakness to Him. In effect, we give ourselves and our situation to God and wait for Him to keep His promise.
